F1 Shake-Up: Ricciardo’s Opportunity Arises Amidst Growing Impatience
Daniel Ricciardo’s F1 career might get a revival as reports suggest he could be cut from Red Bull. Facing the prospect of being dropped, the summer break seemed the likely time for Red Bull to make a move. Despite an initial shot at Sergio Perez’s seat, Ricciardo struggled, being outperformed by his young teammate, Yuki Tsunoda.
As rumors swirled about Liam Lawson taking Ricciardo’s spot, Ricciardo flipped the script in Austria, finishing ninth and outpacing Tsunoda. Leading F1 analyst Will Buxton now speculates Ricciardo might find a new home with Williams. Williams had pursued Carlos Sainz, but with Sainz undecided, Williams team boss James Vowles is losing patience.
Buxton explained on F1TV, “Ricciardo’s entire future is on the line. There is talk of negotiations with Williams for their second seat alongside Alex Albon. Williams are tired of waiting for Sainz to decide and may shut that door.” Ricciardo may need to seize this chance with Williams as other seats are quickly being filled, including Ferrari junior Ollie Bearman joining Haas.
Red Bull’s junior driver program is reportedly brimming with talent, yet RB CEO Peter Bayer acknowledged Ricciardo’s role in developing Tsunoda and expected performance from him. “We don’t need to develop Daniel. He came into the team to perform and help with Yuki,” Bayer told PlanetF1.com, noting Ricciardo’s experience and speed.
F1’s Lawrence Barretto tweeted Ricciardo isn’t at immediate risk of losing his seat mid-season and will have time to prove his worth. Despite Helmut Marko’s blunt comments, Ricciardo’s fate at Red Bull remains in his hands. Fox Sports’ Michael Lamonato even suggested Red Bull might regret re-signing Perez, which could play in Ricciardo’s favor.
Ricciardo admitted no pressure or ultimatums yet but acknowledged the need to perform. His strong showing in Austria, including a fourth-place in the Miami sprint race, underscores his potential to secure a new deal.
