Just In- Fan Who Threw Chips at Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard at Tour de France Arrested
A spectator who threw chips at Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard during the 14th stage of the Tour de France has been arrested, according to French media. The incident occurred with about 2 km remaining in the stage, involving a man in a yellow hat throwing what appeared to be Bugles chips at the cyclists.
According to *Le Parisien*, the fan was arrested for “aggravated assault” and will be questioned. Witnesses reported that the man was apprehended shortly after the incident and taken away by police.
**Jonas Vingegaard expressed his confusion and disappointment after the stage**:
“There were quite a few boos and someone threw chips. I heard they threw chips at Tadej, which is strange. Just stay off the road and don’t boo anyone. I don’t understand why you would boo cyclists during a race.”
Despite the disruption, Pogačar managed to win the stage with a 39-second lead, solidifying his position in the yellow jersey.
**Mauro Gianetti, the manager of UAE Team Emirates, commented on the incident**:
“It was chips in the face. The public sometimes gets too excited and does something stupid. Fortunately, there were no serious problems.”
Although there were no serious injuries, the riders’ union, CPA, announced its intention to take legal action. CPA president Adam Hansen stated on social media that they would pursue legal action against the perpetrator, emphasizing that such disrespectful behavior would not be tolerated.
Jonathan Vaughters, the manager of EF Education-EasyPost, also weighed in:
“Are you here to be a cycling fan, do you love the sport? Are you here to watch the race or are you here to get on TV by doing something stupid? I don’t understand why he’s there.”
Former UCI president Pat McQuaid criticized the organization of the stage, noting that barriers only started in the last 1.4 kilometers, suggesting that more extensive barriers could prevent such incidents in the future.
This event has sparked discussions about fan behavior and security measures at major sporting events like the Tour de France.
