“Couldn’t Keep Up with Tadej” – Julian Alaphilippe Content with Third Place Finish in Montreal
“Following Tadej Was Impossible” – Julian Alaphilippe Content with Third Place in Montreal
Julian Alaphilippe continues to show promising signs of a return to form, securing a podium finish at the GP Montreal on Sunday evening. After a stage win at the Giro d’Italia and second place at the Clasica San Sebastian, Alaphilippe’s third-place finish is another positive result as he works his way back to top shape. Though not yet at his peak, the Soudal-Quick-Step rider is aiming to be a contender for the rainbow jersey at the upcoming World Championships in Zurich.
Reflecting on the race, Alaphilippe acknowledged the difficulty of the day, particularly with the heat and the strong pace set by UAE Team Emirates. “It was a tough day, but we expected that, especially with the heat. We had Gil Gelders at the front and stayed focused in the peloton. In the final, it was up to me and Ilan van Wilder to make our moves. I gave everything, but keeping up with Tadej [Pogacar] on the penultimate climb was impossible. Still, I refocused, and I’m happy with third place—it’s my first podium here,” Alaphilippe said after the race.
After a challenging couple of years following his back-to-back world titles, Alaphilippe is now looking ahead to Zurich with renewed hope of competing for the world champion’s jersey, even though opponents like Tadej Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel remain formidable.
When asked about his prospects for the World Championships, Alaphilippe expressed confidence in being selected. “I’m highly motivated for the Worlds in Zurich, and I hope it will be a great event for the French team. I’m still waiting for official confirmation, but I’m ready to go. I’m happy with how I’m feeling right now, and that’s a positive sign as the season draws to a close,” he added.
