Downtown Abbey Comes Up With Animated Character In Season Seven To Star…Read More
In a bold move, the creators of Downton Abbey have announced an innovative twist for the show’s seventh season: an animated character based on the late Dame Maggie Smith.
The beloved actress, who played the iconic Dowager Countess Violet Crawley, passed away in 2022. To honor her legacy, the show’s writers have incorporated an animated version of Dame Maggie’s character.
“We wanted to keep her spirit alive,” said executive producer Gareth Neame. “Dame Maggie’s wit and charm will continue to delight audiences through this unique animation.”
The animated Dowager Countess will appear in select episodes, offering wisdom and sass from beyond the grave. The animation style will blend seamlessly with live-action sequences.
“We’ve worked closely with Dame Maggie’s estate to ensure the animation stays true to her likeness and spirit,” added Neame.
Season 7’s storyline will explore the Crawley family’s adaptation to post-World War I England, with the animated Dowager Countess offering guidance and commentary.
Fans are divided, with some embracing the creative tribute and others expressing skepticism.
“Dame Maggie’s presence is still deeply felt,” said Hugh Bonneville (Lord Grantham). “This animation is a wonderful way to keep her memory alive.”
Downton Abbey Season 7 premieres in 2025 on ITV and PBS.
