National Comedy Center Honors George Carlin’s Legacy with Archive Acquisition and Statue Announcement
The National Comedy Center has acquired the extensive archives of legendary comedian George Carlin, marking a major milestone in preserving the legacy of one of comedy’s most influential figures. The announcement was made by Carlin’s daughter, Kelly Carlin, during a private event in New York City hosted by the Comedy Center. The archive, spanning over 50 years of Carlin’s career, will play a central role in the Center’s upcoming museum experience, celebrating the art and impact of comedy.
The event, *Satire and Democracy: Empowering the Citizenry with Comedy*, held at The Paley Center for Media, featured a panel discussion in tribute to Carlin. Panelists included comedians Lewis Black, Robert Klein, Larry Wilmore, and Lizz Winstead. Moderated by Kliph Nesteroff, author of *The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels, and the History of American Comedy*, the discussion was recorded for the Comedy Center’s archives. The event coincided with what would have been Carlin’s 79th birthday.
Carlin’s archive includes a treasure trove of creative material: annotated set lists, handwritten journals, awards, letters, clothing, scrapbooks, arrest records, and unreleased video and audio recordings. This rich collection provides a unique glimpse into the creative mind of a comedic trailblazer.
In a statement, Kelly Carlin reflected on the importance of preserving her father’s legacy:
“There comes a time in life when it’s time to let go of our parent’s stuff. For me, this has been a literal process. Through writing my memoir and touring my solo show, I’ve had the chance to honor and transform my past with my father. I am thrilled that the National Comedy Center will provide a permanent home for my dad’s legacy. Their dedication to the art of comedy ensures his work will inspire future generations.”
Journey Gunderson, Executive Director of the National Comedy Center, emphasized Carlin’s enduring impact: “George Carlin redefined stand-up comedy, and we’re honored to steward his legacy. This archive allows us to share his creative process with generations to come.”
As part of the initiative, a statue honoring George Carlin will also be erected, further solidifying his status as a comedic icon.
The National Comedy Center, a $50 million non-profit cultural institution, is dedicated to celebrating the history and future of comedy. Supported by public and private funding, including over $3.5 million from New York State, the Center is designed to offer an immersive and interactive experience tracing the evolution of comedy.
Tom Benson, Chairman of the project, highlighted the Center’s mission:
“Our museum will provide visitors with a personalized, interactive journey through comedy’s rich history. By preserving and connecting comedy’s past with its future, we ensure its relevance for generations.”
The Center’s groundbreaking ceremony last August featured prominent figures in comedy, including Jerry Seinfeld, Nick Offerman, and creative teams from David Letterman’s career. Families of comedy legends such as George Carlin, Milton Berle, and Harold Ramis also attended.
Rooted in Lucille Ball’s vision for her hometown of Jamestown, New York, to become a hub for comedic arts, the Center continues to build on her legacy. It also operates the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum and hosts the annual Lucille Ball Comedy Festival, which has featured iconic performers like Jay Leno, Joan Rivers, Ray Romano, and more.
With the addition of George Carlin’s archives, the National Comedy Center reaffirms its commitment to honoring comedy’s greatest talents while inspiring future generations to embrace the art form.
