Lewis Hamilton Plans to Change His Name Ahead of Highly Anticipated Ferrari Move
Lewis Hamilton is preparing to legally change his name as he gears up for his highly anticipated switch to Ferrari. The seven-time world champion will incorporate his mother’s surname, Larbalestier, alongside Hamilton, in a move that honors both sides of his family.
Hamilton, who was knighted in 2021 for his contributions to motorsport, will make this name change as he enters his 19th season in Formula One. The decision comes as Hamilton embarks on a new chapter with the iconic Italian team, Ferrari, for the 2025 season.
Speaking to *The Mirror*, Hamilton explained his motivation for the name change: “I’m really proud of my family’s name: Hamilton. Actually, none of you might know that my mum’s surname is Larbalestier. And I’m just about to put that in my name.”
He added, “I don’t really fully understand the whole idea of why, when people get married, the woman loses her name. I really want her name to continue on with the Hamilton name.”
Hamilton’s close relationship with his mother, Carmen Larbalestier, has been evident throughout his career. Their bond was highlighted during his victory at the 2024 British Grand Prix, a significant win that ended a 945-day drought since his last triumph at the 2021 Saudi Arabia Grand Prix.
This victory was especially meaningful, as it made Hamilton the oldest race winner in Formula One since Nigel Mansell’s victory in 1994. The win also reaffirmed Hamilton’s ability to compete at the highest level, even as he faces new challenges and transitions in his career.
Hamilton’s name change coincides with his entry into an elite group of drivers who have raced in Formula One into their 40s. He joins the ranks of world champions like Fernando Alonso, Michael Schumacher, and Kimi Raikkonen. Additionally, Hamilton has the opportunity to make history by becoming only the fourth driver to win a world championship after turning 40, a feat last accomplished by Jack Brabham in 1966.
Ferrari’s team principal, Fred Vasseur, expressed confidence in Hamilton’s potential to thrive with the team. “He’s bringing his own experience and background, which will be beneficial for the development of the team,” Vasseur said. “It will help Charles [Leclerc] and the engineers. It’s another positive step for us.”
Vasseur also highlighted Hamilton’s strong performances in the 2024 season, particularly in races in Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi. “I was never really worried about his situation,” he remarked.
As Hamilton prepares for his debut season with Ferrari and a potential new world championship bid, his decision to change his name symbolizes both a personal and professional transformation, reflecting his enduring legacy in Formula One.
