Ex-Security Guard at the Center of Explosive Blackmail Scandal Targeting Schumacher Family
A former security guard for Michael Schumacher’s family has been convicted alongside two others in a shocking blackmail case that threatened to expose the private life of the Formula 1 legend.
The three men attempted to extort €15 million ($24.8 million) from Schumacher’s family, demanding payment to prevent the release of hundreds of personal photos, videos, and confidential medical records.
A court in Wuppertal, Germany, handed down a three-year prison sentence to the main defendant, who had prior convictions. His son received a six-month suspended sentence along with a fine of $1,986. Meanwhile, the former security guard, accused of playing a key role in the crime, was given a two-year suspended sentence and a fine of $3,973 for aiding and abetting.
Judge Birgit Neubert highlighted the security guard’s significant breach of trust, stating that his actions were instrumental in the attempted blackmail. The perpetrators had planned to release the stolen materials on the darknet, but authorities seized approximately 900 pictures, nearly 600 videos, and Schumacher’s digitized medical records. However, one hard drive remains missing.
The Schumacher family, represented by lawyer Thilo Damm, has vowed to appeal the sentence given to the ex-security guard, arguing that he should face a harsher four-year prison term. While the other two defendants admitted to their crimes, the former security guard denied any wrongdoing, claiming he did not steal the sensitive data.
Michael Schumacher has remained out of the public eye since his devastating skiing accident in December 2013, which left him with a life-altering brain injury. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion, who retired in 2012 with 91 race wins and multiple titles with Ferrari and Benetton, has been receiving private medical care at his family home in Switzerland since 2014.
