Accompanied by her husband, Austin, on piano, and with their toddler son, Emerson, in tow, she delivered a stirring rendition of Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel.”In a touching moment, Underwood held Emerson during the performance, visibly moved by Nix’s vocals. “I’m sorry — he’s just adorable and sweet, and I just … it got to me,” Underwood said, wiping away tears.
Beyond her vocal talent, Nix’s personal transformation inspired many. After giving birth to Emerson, she embarked on a journey to become a healthier role model, shedding over 160 pounds. “I was overweight my whole life, always the bigger girl,” Nix shared. “Right after I had my son, I was over 315 pounds. I just remember being in the delivery room and just looking down at him, knowing that if I wanted to be the best mom that I could, that this lifestyle was not going to work.”
Throughout the competition, Nix showcased her versatility, delivering powerful performances of songs by Whitney Houston, Rascal Flatts, and more. Her emotional rendition of “Tell Your Heart To Beat Again” brought mentor Jelly Roll to tears, further cementing her place in the hearts of viewers.
Nix’s faith has been a guiding force in her journey. She expressed her desire to inspire others, especially her son, by pursuing her dreams. “I am doing this because I want Emerson to know that anything is possible,” she said. “He is watching his mama go after her dreams. I hope one day he’ll do the same.”
As the competition progressed, Nix continued to impress both judges and audiences alike. Her performances during the Disney-themed nights, including “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” and “You’ll Be in My Heart,” showcased her vocal strength and emotional depth. Judges praised her ability to connect with the audience, highlighting her as a standout contestant.
In the finale, Nix delivered a moving rendition of “In Jesus Name,” followed by a heartfelt performance of Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb,” paying tribute to her journey and her hometown. Despite her standout performances, she finished as the second runner-up. Judge Carrie Underwood, visibly moved, was seen discreetly wiping away tears during Nix’s performance.
