Netflix Goes Big With New Scarlett Johansson Thriller From David Fincher
Netflix Greenlights New Thriller Series “Glass Veil” Starring Scarlett Johansson
HOLLYWOOD — Scarlett Johansson is making her long-anticipated return to the small screen — this time with Netflix. The streaming giant has announced production on “Glass Veil,” an original psychological thriller series headlined and executive produced by the Oscar-nominated actress.
Set to premiere in late 2026, Glass Veil will mark Johansson’s first lead role in a serialized drama. The show centers around Ava Mercer, a former high-level intelligence officer turned missing person — one whose sudden reappearance seven years after her reported death threatens to expose a decades-old conspiracy.
Johansson, widely known for her iconic roles in the Avengers franchise, Marriage Story, and Under the Skin, describes the character as her most complex yet.
“Ava walks the line between myth and memory. She’s not a hero, she’s not a villain — she’s something in between,” Johansson said in a statement released by Netflix. “It’s the kind of role I’ve always wanted to play in a long-form narrative.”
Netflix has partnered with showrunner Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve) and director David Fincher (Gone Girl, Mindhunter), both of whom have praised Johansson’s performance as “unrelenting” and “hypnotically grounded.”
Insiders say the series explores the psychological toll of secrets — both governmental and personal. Each episode of Glass Veil peels back a layer of Ava’s past through shifting timelines and unreliable narration. The narrative is described as Jason Bourne meets The Crown, with a noir-tinged visual palette and a female-driven power struggle at its core.
Filming begins this fall in Budapest, Berlin, and Cape Town, and Netflix is reportedly investing over $130 million into the project. Early concept art and screen tests have already created buzz across industry circles, sparking rumors of an Emmy campaign before the series even airs.
“Scarlett brings a vulnerability and sharpness to Ava that’s unmatched,” said Fincher. “She’s not playing a role. She’s living in it.”
This marks Johansson’s first streaming series role and her most extensive creative involvement behind the scenes. She is also executive producing through her company These Pictures, which has been developing original content since 2021.
