Chelsea's Moises Caicedo was 'LUCKY' to avoid a red card against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup

Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo was ‘LUCKY’ to avoid red card against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup

Chelsea Article

Furious fans believe Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo should have been sent off during his team’s match against Newcastle on Tuesday night.

The £115 million summer signing was shown a yellow card inside the first minute of the Blues‘ Carabao Cup quarter-final against the Magpies.

Caicedo was seen challenging Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon for the ball before scraping his studs down the winger’s back-leg.

Gordon was left writhing in agony before match official Jarred Gillett brandished a yellow card to the former Brighton midfielder.

Despite the fact that the incident occurred in the first minute of the game, social media users quickly suggested that Caicedo should have been sent off for the challenge.

Gary Neville, a Sky Sports pundit and former Manchester United defender, was among the first to comment on the incident, writing simply: ‘Red’.

Craig Hope of Mail Sport noted the absence of the Video Assistant Referee on the night, writing: ‘No VAR tonight… with it is that a red card for Caicedo? Went right down Gordon’s calf/achilles’ tendon.

‘Anthony Gordon was injured by a vicious tackle from Caicedo, who’s studs hit the back of Gordon’s leg. ‘Caicedo escaped another straight red,’ said another.

One user described it as a “horrible challenge from Caicedo on Gordon.” 9 times out of 10, that’s a red. #nufc’

‘Premier League refs in matches without VAR are now afraid to show a red card because they don’t have a backup if they’re wrong. Caicedo’s challenge is absolutely revolting. Colwill’s was nearly as bad, and there was no bloody free kick! #nufc’

In a similar vein, one fan wrote: ‘If there is VAR tonight, Caicedo is shown red… It’s a good thing there isn’t. I have no idea what he’s thinking there’.

‘Another red card was thrown. Caicedo’s challenge is horrifying. ‘No interest in the ball whatsoever,’ said one irate user.
