Nigeria’s Super Eagles’ loss to Cote d’Ivoire in the AFCON 2023 Final
The Super Eagles faced the Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire in the championship game on Sunday, February 11. The game ended in defeat, despite the fact that many Nigerians, including famous people like Moses Bliss, were cheering for the Super Eagles to win.
Brown Ideye, a member of the Nigerian football team that won the 2013 AFCON tournament in South Africa, spoke briefly with Legit.ng about his thoughts on the Super Eagles’ most recent loss.
Ideye said it a shame that Nigeria was not able to win an AFCON cup as a result of the loss.
“At this moment, I am unable to speak. It’s unfortunate,” he remarked.
Nigeria won the AFCON group stage despite defeating Cote d’Ivoire, although the championship match was difficult. Leading scorer William Troost-Ekong’s header in the first half gave Jose Peseiro’s Super Eagles the early lead. However, Franck Kessie’s header gave the Elephant an equaliser. Kessie’s goal was followed by Sebastien Haller’s winning goal for Cote d’Ivoire minutes later, leaving the score at 2-1.
With three AFCON cups, the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire have now caught up to the Super Eagles.
