Trent Alexander-Arnold surpasses Manchester United legend on Premier League all-time assist list
Liverpool defeated Sheffield United 2-0 in Chris Wilder’s first game back in charge of the Blades on Wednesday, closing the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to two points.
Liverpool were frustrated for long periods of the game despite taking the lead through Virgil Van Dijk, with Dominik Szoboszlai’s goal adding late gloss to a middling performance.
On 37 minutes, Van Dijk volleyed home his first goal of the season from a trademark Alexander-Arnold corner.
A VAR check cleared the goal and put Liverpool on track for victory, while Alexander-Arnold picked up his 56th Premier League assist.
As a result, the 25-year-old surpassed Paul Scholes in the Premier League assist rankings, albeit in 288 fewer games than the Old Trafford legend.
He is currently tied with Liverpool teammate Andy Robertson in terms of assists, and if either of them gets another, they will set the Premier League record for a defender.
However, Alexander-Arnold still has a long way to go to catch Steven Gerrard’s 92 Premier League assists, which some may argue settles the long-running debate between Scholes and the Liverpool icon.
Klopp praised his team’s maturity after the game against Sheffield United.
“I’m really pleased with the result,” the German said, according to Sky Sports.
“I’m very pleased with many aspects of the game.” Aside from a few instances when we gave the ball away in areas where we should not have, I would call it a mature performance.
“Even if you didn’t see the game, you heard it because we calmed a tense situation.” That was extremely important.
“I don’t want to be too harsh. I know we can play better football, but at this time of year, you play, win, recover, and then play again.
“It would have been fantastic if we could have scored the second goal earlier.” We attempted to create without revealing too much.
“We didn’t create the clear-cut chances, and it happens sometimes.” You must use their set pieces and defend their set pieces. If you don’t put it to bed, there’s no game without tricky moments.
“Who had a right to win that game?” It was our fault. We must go through this [period] like everyone else. When you have a good feeling and the results are beneficial, you don’t feel the intensity as much.”
