Arsenal and Newcastle are “set to battle” for Bundesliga Star.
A star player in the Bundesliga is supposedly being pursued by Arsenal and Newcastle.
Despite their strong starts to the season—they now hold third and seventh place in the Premier League, respectively—both teams want to bolster their rosters with some artistic flare.
They are now considering the possibility of pursuing the same player before the January transfer market opens.
Julian Brandt of Borussia Dortmund is the player who Eddie Howe and Mikel Arteta are interested in, according to The Mirror.
Entering his sixth season at Dortmund, Brandt has had a standout debut, tallying four goals and dishing out four assists in 11 Bundesliga games.
He was outstanding against Howe’s team at the Westfalenstadion last week, scoring twice in his team’s 2-0 Champions League victory over Newcastle.
The 27-year-old has played his whole career in Germany, but two of the biggest teams in England are interested in signing him this winter, so that may change.
It’s unclear if Dortmund would be willing to let go of Brandt halfway through the season. Brandt can play on either wing or as a No. 10 position.
Although they are presently 10 points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen, the team is still in a strong position to advance to the Champions League knockout stages.
Brandt left Bayer Leverkusen to join Dortmund in 2019, but if he had made a different decision two years prior, his career would have taken a very different turn.
In order to capitalize on the German international’s encouraging first 18 months at Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp sought to bring him to Anfield in 2017.
Even Mohamed Salah, who had previously struggled in the Premier League at Chelsea, was favored by the Reds manager over Brandt.
Nevertheless, Salah completed his £39 million move from Roma to Merseyside, while Brandt, who had just turned 21 at the time, chose to remain at Leverkusen.
Since then, Salah has gone on to win every major award with Liverpool. This past weekend, he scored his 200th goal in English football during a 3-0 victory over Brentford.
Although Brandt has not been able to replicate such stats in Germany, he has nevertheless thrived for Dortmund over the years. If Arsenal or Newcastle increase their interest in him in the upcoming weeks, Brandt may finally have the chance to show himself in England.
