Arsenal’s interest in Jeremie Frimpong and Douglas Luiz demonstrates that they are constructing a future juggernaut
The Gunners are already a force to be reckoned with, sitting five points clear at the top of the Premier League table and running Man City close last season, but the potential of their current squad and the players they are interested in signing is frightening for non-Arsenal fans.
Mikel Arteta and Edu are interested in signing Jeremie Frimpong in order to reshape Arsenal’s defense. Ben White has done well at right-back, but his preferred position is in the middle of the backline. Signing Frimpong, the Bundesliga’s most exciting nominal right-back for several years, would give Arteta the flexibility to change things up.
The Gunners are still interested in Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz. Though it would require an absurd amount of money to lure him away in January, Arsenal will give it their all, and if they fail, there is always the summer window.
Arsenal is building for the future, which is evident not only in their transfer policy, which focuses on players in their early to mid-20s, but also in the fact that they have signed most of their stars to new, long-term contracts.
Frimpong (22) and Luiz (25) fit right into the Gunners’ player profile, and according to data firm SciSports, both are rated very highly. Frimpong has the highest SciSports potential of any right-back under the age of 25, while Luiz ranks seventh among central midfielders under the age of 25.
Adding these two to a squad that already includes some of the world’s best players would transform Arsenal into a juggernaut. According to the SciSports algorithm, Luiz’s potential is only marginally lower than Declan Rice’s, demonstrating how highly the Brazilian is regarded.
Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard, William Saliba, Kai Havertz, and Jurrien Timber all have tremendous potential – and are already exceptional players. While not all of the players mentioned here are likely to reach the heights they could, there is still plenty to be excited about if you’re a Gooner.
