John Cleese, the legendary actor behind Basil Fawlty, has announced plans to honour his former Fawlty Towers colleagues with a joint statue. The iconic comedian, 84, revealed the project, set to be unveiled in 2025, will celebrate the beloved British sitcom’s enduring legacy.
“I’m delighted to pay tribute to my talented co-stars,” Cleese said. “Andrew Sachs, Prunella Scales, Connie Booth, and Brian Hall – we created something truly special together.”
The statue, designed by renowned British sculptor, Edward Simpson, will feature Basil, Sybil, Manuel, Polly, and Terry in a classic hotel setting. The location will be in Torquay, Devon, where the show was set.
“This statue will immortalize our quirky hotel family,” Cleese added. “Fawlty Towers’ impact on British comedy is immeasurable. I’m thrilled to share this tribute with the nation.”
Prunella Scales, who played Sybil Fawlty, expressed gratitude: “John’s initiative is a wonderful gesture. We’re proud of our work, and this statue will ensure its enduring popularity.”
The joint statue will serve as a lasting testament to Fawlty Towers’ influence on British comedy and its cherished place in the nation’s heart.
A fitting tribute to a timeless classic.
