Brighton handed Sheffield United a draw following an own goal and a red card
Adam Webster’s own goal handed Sheffield United a 1-1 draw against 10-man Brighton, extending Roberto De Zerbi’s worst league run with the club. Simon Adingra had initially put Brighton ahead with a brilliant solo run, but the momentum shifted after Mahmoud Dahoud received a red card, and Webster slid into his own goal.
This result leaves Brighton winless in the Premier League for six games, the longest such streak for boss De Zerbi since his arrival last year.
The match saw some early action, with Gustavo Hamer almost taking a second-minute lead for Sheffield United. Dahoud’s through ball released Ansu Fati, who beat two defenders but had a shot lacking in power, easily stopped by Wes Foderingham. Adingra subsequently scored his fourth goal of the season, marking the 28th straight league game in which Brighton has scored.
Despite Fati’s promising play, Brighton could not extend their lead. In the 69th minute, the game’s complexion changed as Dahoud was dismissed for stamping on Ben Osborn’s Achilles. Four minutes later, United equalized when Jayden Bogle delivered a ball across the goal, and Webster put the ball into his own net.
This draw extends Brighton’s streak of matches where both teams score to 16, equalling Everton’s Premier League record.
In summary, Brighton’s lead was nullified as Sheffield United escaped the bottom of the table with a 1-1 draw, marking De Zerbi’s worst league run with Brighton.
