Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes denies Packers CB Nixon’s claim that he read his sign
Patrick Mahomes, quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, denied that Green Bay Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon read his signal during their game on Sunday.
With five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Chiefs receivers Rashee Rice and Skyy Moore attempted a rub route to confuse the Packers defense. However, Nixon’s perfect man-marking resulted in an over-the-shoulder interception, which helped Green Bay win.
Nixon stated after the game that Mahomes tapping his knee, as seen on tape, was a signal for Kansas City to take two receivers off the field, allowing him to play flawless defense on the play.
‘I was like, ‘Oh, I’ve seen this before.’ I knew he was going to run it, and he did,’ Nixon explained.
‘First time I’ve checked that play in my career with the Kansas City Chiefs,’ Mahomes joked on Wednesday.
‘He definitely saw a signal,’ added Mahomes. ‘He did an excellent job and made a game-changing play.’
The Packers won the game, 27-19, as the Chiefs struggled to match their previous five-game winning streak. The loss dropped Kansas City’s record to 8-4, keeping them atop the AFC West.
Despite denying Nixon’s audacious claim, Mahomes admitted that the Packers had the upper hand in the costly play.
‘They got me on that one, made a big-time play, and I’ll learn from it and try to be better the next time,’ says the player.
The Chiefs have five games remaining in the season and will look to get back on track against the Buffalo Bills on December 10. When asked about his takeaways from Sunday’s upset, Mahomes continued to make fun of Nixon’s claim.
‘I guess I’ll just try to be more subtle,’ Mahomes said. ‘Try to get us to a position where we can make a play.’
