Cole Palmer shines for Chelsea in a much-needed victory.
The London giants entered the game on a two-game losing streak, but they were overwhelming favorites to defeat Sheffield, who were at the bottom of the table. The Blades managed to keep the Blues at bay in the first half, but Cole Palmer broke the deadlock in the 54th minute. In the 61st minute, the 21-year-old assisted Nicolas Jackson for the club’s second goal.
Chelsea could have scored more goals with the chances they created at Stamford Bridge, but fans will be pleased that the team has ended its losing streak ahead of a critical Carabao Cup quarter-final against Newcastle United on Tuesday evening. Palmer was the standout performer for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in yesterday’s game, contributing two goals.
Aside from his crucial attacking contributions, Palmer had 89 touches with a 92% passing success rate. He completed 59 of his 64 passes attempted and gave Chelsea a level of control in the final third, where Mykhailo Mudryk and Raheem Sterling struggled to keep possession against the Blades. He was unquestionably the match of the match.
Since joining Chelsea from Manchester City last summer, the Englishman has proven to be an excellent acquisition. In only 16 games, he has six goals and five assists for the club. He has already repaid a large portion of the £40 million spent on him with his performances and has a bright future ahead of him as Chelsea’s young and exciting squad continues to improve.
On Tuesday, Chelsea will face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals at Stamford Bridge. Pochettino’s side has a chance to compete for a trophy, but they face a difficult game against the Magpies, who ended their own losing streak yesterday with a 2-0 win over Fulham at St James’ Park.
