Daniel Ricciardo was left frustrated by his RB team for decisions he believes cost him places on the grid for the British Grand Prix.
Daniel Ricciardo is set to start 15th on the grid for the race, but he believes better decisions during Saturday’s qualifying could have secured a higher position. In mixed conditions, he progressed through Qualifying 1, securing tenth place with a late lap. However, his final run in Qualifying 2 was compromised, leaving him frustrated with the team’s strategy.
“Q1 was fun with the mixed conditions,” Ricciardo said. “But Q2 was frustrating. I questioned many of our choices and the run plan. We tripped over everyone in the last chicane, and I started my lap too close to Zhou [Guanyu]. We never had a chance.”
Ricciardo criticized the run plan, suggesting the team left potential on the table. “We didn’t do a great job with the run plan,” he said. “We’re not quick enough, and it showed today. I think we left a lot on the table.”
His frustration also stemmed from early session decisions, such as using a new tire set first. “We put our new set in the first run, and I asked why not use a used set first,” he revealed. “There were lots of little mistakes.”
Despite his measured criticism, Ricciardo remained committed to the team. “Sometimes I feel I should be more animated, but we’re in this together,” he said. “We’ll try to figure it out, but we made mistakes today.”
Ricciardo’s team had consolidated its car following issues with an upgrade package first used in Spain, showing some progress in Austria. However, he struggled with his car again on Friday at Silverstone.
“It’s been a tricky weekend for us pace-wise,” he admitted. “We’re missing something. I trust the team, but we seem to be a bit off on traditional circuits.”
While he avoided directly blaming the team, Ricciardo acknowledged the shortcomings. “I don’t want to point fingers,” he said. “Today’s pace isn’t a true reflection. On paper, it looks bad, but we’re okay. We did a less-than-satisfactory job making it work for us.”
