Cristian Romero

Dejan Kulusevski issues Cristian Romero’s assessment following Tottenham’s victory

Highlights Article

Kulusevski was speaking to the Evening Standard after receiving widespread criticism for what appeared to be an unnecessary challenge on Callum Wilson.

Cristian Romero appeared to have turned a corner early in the season. Last year, the Argentinian was among those who performed far below par. But, alongside Micky van de Ven, he appeared to be rediscovering his best form.

However, his red card against Chelsea served as a reminder of the 25-year-old’s other side of the game. He’s only been back for two games. And it is fair to say that if he had been sent off against again, he would have had few complaints.

Romero challenged Callum Wilson, catching him quite high at first. Then his trailing leg decided to take a swipe at Newcastle’s striker. The VAR, on the other hand, decided to agree with the referee and award a yellow card.

Romero received harsh criticism from Gary Neville. Dejan Kulusevski, however, has insisted that the Tottenham squad has complete faith in the co-vice-captain.

“He gives us so much, he’s an unbelievable player and he always plays on that mark,” he explained to the Evening Standard.

“He is the only one who knows how far he can go.” We have to trust him, and I do. He’s my brother, so whatever he does, we back him up.

“He’s a crucial member of the team.” He has won the World Cup and is a champion. A big player, a great defender, but very composed on the ball, always looking for the right pass.”

After Sunday, it’s difficult to defend Tottenham’s star.

The issue is that Tottenham will never be able to fully rely on Romero in the future. His challenge on Wilson was not his only questionable play of the game.

What makes it even more perplexing is that Tottenham were in complete control. Ange Postecoglou’s side looked like they could blow Newcastle away from the start. So there was no reason for Romero to feel compelled to participate.

Kulusevski is entirely correct. Romero is a fantastic player. However, it is concerning that some of the worst aspects of his game appear to be present right now.
