Dominique Wilkins slams JJ Redick following controversial Larry Bird comment…Says
Dominique Wilkins, a Hall of Fame player and Atlanta Hawks legend, recently criticized J.J. Redick for his comments downplaying the physicality of the NBA in past eras compared to today. This debate was sparked by Redick’s assertion on ESPN’s “First Take” that Larry Bird should not be considered among the greatest three-point shooters and that the game’s physicality is often overstated by older players.
Wilkins responded strongly, stating that Redick doesn’t understand the physical nature of the game during the 1980s and 1990s. He emphasized that players back then dealt with much tougher defense, including being pushed and elbowed, which made scoring significantly more challenging. Wilkins expressed disappointment that Redick, a former player himself, would make such comments, calling them “idiotic” and indicative of a lack of respect for the older generation of players.
Redick, however, stood by his opinion, arguing that outside of hard fouls and fights, the physicality of the actual basketball play has not changed much. He believes the modern game’s challenges are often underappreciated and that players from different eras should be celebrated for their greatness within their specific contexts.
This ongoing debate highlights the passionate differences in perspectives between NBA generations, with each side defending the legitimacy and toughness of their respective eras.
