‘He’s the Only One Who Can Challenge Pogacar… He Can Win the World Championship’ – Matti Breschel Urges Jonas Vingegaard to Compete in 2025 Rwanda Event
Vingegaard Urged by Breschel to Compete in 2025 World Championships in Rwanda: ‘He Can Beat Pogacar’
Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar have built one of cycling’s most intense rivalries, particularly in the Tour de France. While Pogacar is known for competing throughout the year in various types of races, Vingegaard typically focuses on stage races. However, could that change in 2025?
The World Championships in 2025 will be held in Rwanda, presenting a grueling course with nearly 5,500 meters of climbing. Riders more suited to one-day races, such as Mathieu van der Poel, are uncertain if they’ll participate, making Pogacar the favorite for the climber-friendly route. However, with the recent appointment of Vingegaard’s friend Michael Morkov as Danish national coach, and the challenging nature of the Rwanda course, former Danish cyclist Matti Breschel believes Vingegaard is well-positioned to compete for the Rainbow Jersey.
“Jonas, it’s time to start!” urged Breschel on the ‘Radio Tour’ program. Breschel, who finished second in the 2010 World Championships, believes Vingegaard is the only rider capable of keeping pace with Pogacar, stating, “He is the only one who can follow Pogacar… He can win the World Championship on that route with over 5,000 meters of climbing.”
Another Danish former pro, Michael Rasmussen, echoed Breschel’s sentiment, telling *Ekstra Bladet* that the Rwandan course could be ideal for Vingegaard. He joked that maybe Vingegaard should request the entire route be paved but emphasized that this course may be his best shot at a world title.
Whether Vingegaard decides to compete remains to be seen, but the potential for another showdown between him and Pogacar is sure to excite cycling fans globally.
