“This Isn’t College Anymore” – Larry Bird’s NBA Debut Earns Mixed Reviews from Coach Bill Fitch
Larry Bird’s NBA debut was marked by a tough preseason loss to Dr. J’s 76ers and a modest 5.5 rating from Boston Celtics head coach Bill Fitch. Drafted sixth overall in 1978, Bird initially delayed signing with the Celtics to help Indiana State chase an NCAA title.
The Celtics, eager for a revival, accepted Bird’s decision, hoping he would lead the franchise back to its former glory. However, his first game drew a lukewarm response from Fitch. “I’d rate him a 5.5 out of 10,” Fitch remarked. “Five points for his first-half performance, and half a point for the second half. His game mirrored our team’s performance—strong in the first half, but lacking in the second.”
Bird’s First Taste of NBA Competition
The transition from college to the NBA is challenging, even for talents like Bird. In his preseason debut, the Celtics were soundly defeated 115-90 by the Philadelphia 76ers, led by Julius Erving. Despite this, Bird showed promise, scoring 12 points in the first quarter and holding his own against the seasoned Dr. J.
“It was a tough introduction, playing against the best forward in the NBA,” Fitch noted. “It gave him a glimpse of how challenging the NBA would be. This isn’t college.”
Bird’s Legendary Rise
Though Bird struggled to adjust initially, he quickly found his footing. In his rookie season, he started all 82 games, averaging 21.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 4.5 assists, earning Rookie of the Year honors, an All-Star spot, and a place on the All-NBA First Team.
Bird’s career culminated in three MVP awards, three championships, and recognition as one of the greatest players in basketball history. His legendary trash-talking remains a memorable part of his legacy.
That first preseason game was merely a prelude to the illustrious career that would follow for the iconic Celtic.
