‘It’s Painful to See Him Leave’ – Patrick Lefevere Assures There’s No Hard Feelings Between Him and Julian Alaphilippe Over His Decision to Exit Wolfpack After 11 Years”
Julian Alaphilippe leaves Soudal – Quick-Step after 11 years to join Tudor Pro Cycling, ending an era with Patrick Lefevere”
Julian Alaphilippe is set to leave Soudal – Quick-Step and join Tudor Pro Cycling after spending 11 years with Patrick Lefevere’s team. During that time, he became a two-time world champion and nearly won the 2019 Tour de France by accident. In recent years, the relationship between the French rider and the Belgian manager has deteriorated, ultimately leading Alaphilippe to decline Lefevere’s contract renewal offer after a strong 2024 season.
“Julian had two very weak years, 2022 and 2023, and I didn’t want to pay that much money anymore,” Lefevere explains in his HLN column. “He wasn’t a rider who was racing for a minimum salary,” he adds.
Lefevere also reflects on the contract extension he offered Alaphilippe, which was declined. “He was perfectly within his rights to refuse the offer,” he said. “We can talk about the end of an era. For him as well as for us.”
“We have a long history together. The little guy came to us very young,” he continues. “We worked a lot, but we also had a lot of fun together. It always hurts to see him go. He wasn’t just a rider; Julian is like a child of the family that you leave behind.”
“I have to admit that I was sometimes a bit harsh and made some stupid comments,” Lefevere confesses. “But some things were also misinterpreted. Like what I said about Marion (Rousse): I simply meant that it’s a good thing she keeps him in check because that’s what you need to do with Julian. Like in any relationship, we’ve had our ups and downs, but I’m glad we had a good conversation. A few weeks ago, he came to Wevelgem, and we had a one-on-one chat. We’re parting on a positive note. I certainly am, and I think he is too. I believe his heart is still with us.”
“Julian is truly a good guy. I was tough on him, but I can also say that I did a lot for him, even in his private life, like when his father passed away… That’s why I’m happy our relationship remains cordial,” Lefevere concludes.
