Browns QB Joe Flacco Teases His Next Step
Joe Flacco’s services are still very much up for grabs for the Cleveland Browns in the next season.
After a productive time in Cleveland, the 39-year-old Comeback Player of the Year will be a free agency this offseason. He’ll probably look for a beginning opportunity, although it could not be easy to come by. Should that not materialize, Flacco would be willing to rejoin the Browns.
It was one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I’m going to take my time as usual,” Flacco said on February 8 to Cleveland.com. I adore the place and would definitely like to return.
Originally recruited to the practice squad, Flacco became the team’s starting quarterback very fast. Flacco added 13 touchdown passes and led the NFL in passing yards (323.2-per-game) starting in Week 13.
Prior to agreeing to terms with the Browns, Flacco’s NFL career appeared to be coming to an end. However, he wants to continue playing for as long as a team will have him, and he has no plans to put up his cleats.
According to Flacco, “I’m not riding off into any sunset,” cleveland.com. That’s not how I roll. I want to keep playing until it might become nasty, regardless of how bad it gets. Take me off that field, please. That being said, I might not have the final say. I wasn’t even on a team this year until after a week or so. I am aware that I don’t make all of those choices. However, I believe I’ll return there the next year and just take things day by day.
Browns Would Cherish a Returning Joe Flacco
Flacco has expressed his gratitude to the Browns, and the emotion is reciprocated. The general manager of the Browns, Andrew Berry, expressed his willingness to consider Flacco returning as Deshaun Watson’s backup.
During his postseason news conference last month, Browns General Manager Andrew Berry stated, “We’d absolutely love to have Joe back.” He’s a capable quarterback, but he reminds me a little bit of Jacoby from the previous season, I suppose. Depending, you know? I would want to have all of our talented players return, but I have limitations. Although I kind of lean both ways, it would not be an issue if Joe returned.
If Flacco isn’t selected, the Browns will undoubtedly look for a more seasoned backup quarterback. Watson and Dorian Thompson-Robinson are committed to Cleveland for the upcoming season. Berry did add that they will look into a third possibility.
Berry stated, I think the backup quarterback position is truly among the top 30 on the roster.” We also think that carrying three is a good idea, so we’ll probably carry it out going ahead.
Another Possible Browns Quarterback Option Is Jacoby Brissett
The Browns may try to get back together with Jacoby Brissett, another former backup quarterback in Cleveland, if Flacco decides to go elsewhere.
Brissett played for the Browns during the 2022–2023 season, making 11 starts in lieu of Watson during his 11–game ban. In those seven starts, he was 4–7 with 64% of his passes completed for 12 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.
In the offseason, Brissett signed a contract with the Washington Commanders. Despite not starting a game, he appeared proficient throughout his brief appearances on the field. 18 out of 23 throws by Brissett were completed for 224 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions.
Hopefully, there won’t be as much talk over the backup quarterback position as there was the previous year. As the highest-paid player on the team, Watson’s presence on the field is essential for the Browns to have a realistic chance of winning the Super Bowl.
