Jeff Hafley Modifies the Defensive Coaching Staff of the Green Bay Packers
Many were taken aback by Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur’s selection of the team’s next defensive coordinator. Despite the fact that Jeff Hafley was hired out of the blue, he has the freedom to mold the staff anyway he sees fit. The defensive coaching staff of the Green Bay Packers will not resemble the group from the previous season.
Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur surprised many with his choice for the next Packers defensive coordinator. While Jeff Hafley came out of nowhere to land the position, he is getting the opportunity to shape the staff the way he sees fit. The Green Bay Packers defensive coaching staff will look a lot different than it did last season.
LaFleur seems to have taken note of certain lessons from his previous hiring of a new defensive coordinator. LaFleur projected Joe Barry to take Mike Pettine’s role as the defensive coordinator in 2019. However, LaFleur made no other adjustments to the defensive coaching staff of the Packers.
Barry took over the team that Pettine had assembled. None of the aides had ever collaborated with Barry before. We are by no means defending Barry, but it might have had an impact on the outcome of Barry’s first stint in Green Bay.
As previously said, it seems LaFleur took note of his error. LaFleuer and Hafley made some significant adjustments to the defensive coaching staff of the Packers. Hafley is adding three new players in the hopes that their perspectives can help the Packers defense succeed in 2024 and beyond. These are Joe Barry’s staff’s two retained coaches in addition to the new ones.
Assistant Defensive Line Coach Vince Oghobaase
Although unverified, rumors have claimed that Vince Oghobaase will take over as the assistant defensive line coach for the Packers. Originating from Boston College, Oghobaase served as Hafley’s defensive line coach from 2020 to 2023. Having been the assistant defensive line coach for the San Francisco 49ers from, he does have some NFL coaching experience.
There have been rumors that Oghobaase will handle the defensive line’s interior. Kenny Clark, an experienced defensive lineman, will be his mentor. Additionally, Oghobaase will work with young athletes like Devonte Wyatt, Colby Wooden, and TJ Slaton. It will be vital that he works with Wyatt. Wyatt had a respectable 2023 campaign, but the Packers will need to see even greater results from him in 2024.
Jerry Montgomery, the previous coordinator of run games and defensive line coach, will be replaced by Oghobaase. Montgomery, who was hired by the New England Patriots this off-season, had to accept that his time had long since past. During his tenure, Montgomery’s run defense was notably lacking in effectiveness.
