The seven plays that characterized Jordan Love’s Packers breakthrough
Jordan Love began convincing a lot of people in the midst of his rookie season that he was Aaron Rodgers’ long-term replacement at quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.
It may have come at different times for different people.
In light of Love’s 32-touchdown, 4,159-yard, playoff-qualifying season, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst traveled back in time to his seminal moment.
After the season, Gutekunst stated at some point in 2019.
After trading up to choose Love in the first round of the 2020 draft, the general manager suddenly had to back down.
I believe it’s one of those things you simply never know until they take on all the responsibilities that come with being a quarterback at the line of scrimmage and managing his football club, said Gutekunst.
I’ve always mentioned that there’s often a continuum from playing to playing well to winning. In the first season, he completed that really quickly. quite eager to go where he can.
Putting aside Gutekunst’s early faith in Love, here are a few moments from Love’s debut season as the starter that demonstrated his permanence, presented in chronological order.
Musgrave claims that with less than four minutes remaining and the Packers up 13-3, coach Matt LaFleur decided to call it late after they had only prepared the play once.
Running back Aaron Jones gestured from the slot right to the left flat after Love skillfully executed two fakes: first, a screen to him; second, a twisting fake to running back AJ Dillon in the right flat. He was faking it like Rodgers. The rookie Musgrave then broke free from his block and started to leak down the middle.
After the game, Love stated, Yeah, that was a really good playcall, something we kind of just put in this week. Luke is on a late trickle down the middle, and there are alternatives to throw it to both men. His finish was excellent; the middle gapped and he had just one player to miss, which he did, scoring his first touchdown.
The Packers’ four-game losing run was ended with the 20-3 victory, which also put them on the right track to improve their season.
