Liverpool to challenge Real Madrid for kylian Mbappe
After Real Madrid reportedly dropped out of the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe, Liverpool have seen the possibility of him joining one of their Premier League rivals increase. Despite signing a new contract with PSG, Mbappe’s future remains uncertain, with the Reds long-term admirers of the 24-year-old.
Despite being heavily linked with Mbappe in the past, Spanish outlet Cadena SER claims that Real Madrid are no longer prioritizing a potential transfer. Los Blancos have turned their attention elsewhere with Vinicius Jr, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo at the club and Brazilian wonderkid Endrick set to join them.
This has allowed other top teams to enter the race for Mbappe’s signature, and L’Equipe has previously stated that Liverpool is interested in signing him. Their interest dates back to 2017, but the finances are a concern for Jurgen Klopp’s team.
According to Spanish media, Mbappe is seeking a yearly salary of £30.5 million after tax, as well as a signing bonus of around £87 million, in addition to any fee that PSG may be willing to pay for him.
Though Liverpool may have a large sum of money to spend this summer, especially if Mohamed Salah leaves for Saudi Arabia, it is unlikely that they will be able to match their rivals’ offers.
If Manchester City or Chelsea were interested in signing Mbappe, they would most likely be able to offer him a more appealing financial package. Liverpool spent around £150 million in the summer to rebuild their midfield with Dominik Szoboszlai, Alex MacAllister, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo, but Klopp has typically had to keep up with Liverpool’s rivals without matching their spending.
Mbappe’s mother, Fayza Lamari, is a Liverpool fan, and her son has previously revealed that talks about moving to Anfield took place before joining PSG. “We talked a little bit, but not too much,” he said last year to the Telegraph.
“I spoke to Liverpool because it is my mother’s favorite club, and my mother adores Liverpool.” I’m not sure why; you’ll have to ask her! It’s a good club, and we’ve known them for five years. I ran into them in Monaco. It’s a large club.”
Klopp has previously expressed a desire to bring Mbappe to the club but has played down the idea due to the financial implications, which could come back to bite Liverpool if one of their rivals is able to pull off a deal and bring Mbappe to England.
