Luis Rubiales faces a three-year ban from SportsFIFA for kissing a World Cup star.
On Monday, October 30, Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Association, was handed a three-year ban by FIFA, the body that oversees international football.
This implies that Luis Rubiales, who has been embroiled in legal disputes since kissing Spanish forward Jenni Hermoso after Spain defeated England in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final, will be barred from playing professional football for three years.
Prior to taking office as president of the Spanish FA in September, he was first temporarily barred from football by the world football governing body for a period of ninety days.
Following FIFA’s disciplinary proceedings, the 46-year-old Spanish football official was found guilty of violating Article 13 of the organization’s code of conduct.
In contrast to Rubiales, who insisted that the kiss he gave the female football player during the 2023 Women’s World Cup medal presentation ceremony was “mutual” and “consensual,” Hermoso filed a case that has since been raised to a criminal suit, claiming the kiss was not consensual.
FIFA stated that the case concerned “events that occurred during the Fifa Women’s World Cup final on August 20, 2023, for which Mr. Rubiales had been provisionally suspended for an initial period of 90 days,” in addition to affirming Rubiales’ three-year suspension from all football-related activity.
FIFA said, “He has 10 days to request a motivated decision, which, if requested, would subsequently be published on legal.fifa.com, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Fifa disciplinary code.” There is still a chance to appeal the ruling to the Fifa appellate committee.
“Fifa reaffirms its unwavering commitment to upholding the fundamental standards of decent conduct and to respecting and protecting the integrity of every individual.”
The criminal lawsuit against Luis Rubiales in relation to the kissing incident, which was filed in a national court in Madrid, will go forward despite FIFA’s ban on him.
The court ruled in September that he was not allowed to go within 200 meters of Hermoso.
