Magic Johnson Reflects on His Rivalry with Larry Bird: ‘It Was Never Personal’ – Focus Was on Lakers-Celtics Legacy
Magic Johnson recently opened up about his legendary rivalry with Larry Bird, emphasizing that their intense competition was never about personal accolades but about elevating their teams. Johnson stressed that their focus was on ensuring the Lakers-Celtics matchups were memorable, rather than overshadowing the broader rivalry with individual achievements.
A Rivalry Rooted in Team Success
The epic battles between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird are often cited as the greatest player rivalry in NBA history. What made their encounters so compelling was their mutual dedication to their teams’ victories, not personal glory. Speaking ahead of the 1984 NBA Finals, Magic highlighted this point, stating that both he and Bird understood their roles in securing wins for their teams.
“Larry knows what he has to do to win,” Johnson explained in an interview with the New York Times. “I know what I have to do for us to win. But we won’t get into a personal thing, trying to outdo each other. That’s not our game. Besides, that wouldn’t be fair to all the people who expect the Lakers and the Celtics—not just us—to put on a great show.”
The Pursuit of Championships
Despite their individual accolades, both players endured highs and lows in their pursuit of championships. In 1984, after the Lakers’ loss to the Philadelphia 76ers in the previous year’s Finals, Johnson was eager to lead his team to redemption. However, Bird and the Celtics had other plans, with Bird delivering a stellar performance that led Boston to victory in a grueling seven-game series. Bird averaged 27.4 points and 14.0 rebounds, while Magic contributed 18.0 points and 13.6 assists per game, falling short of Bird’s output.
Magic admitted that facing Bird in the Finals humbled him, making him realize he had room to grow.
Role Models and Basketball Icons
Beyond their on-court rivalry, Johnson and Bird were admired for their basketball intelligence and fundamentals, attributes that made them role models for young players. Former NBA commissioner David Stern capitalized on their rivalry to market the league, positioning both as exemplars of the sport.
“They’re thinking players. And they play the kind of game that kids can emulate,” said Jerry West. “These guys are all about fundamentals and hard work. They’ve definitely had a positive impact on the league.”
Legacies That Are Almost Even
In terms of individual achievements, Johnson and Bird are nearly equal, each boasting three MVP titles and 12 All-Star appearances. However, Magic holds a slight edge with five NBA championships to Bird’s three. Bird himself acknowledged Magic’s success, attributing some of their achievements to the strength of their teammates at the time.
Despite the fierce competition, Johnson and Bird never indulged in showboating. Their rivalry was driven by a shared goal: to lead their respective teams to victory, leaving a legacy that would define an era of NBA history.
