Man City: First team in Premier League history to achieve incredible attacking statistic
There were concerns about City’s attack going into the game without Erling Haaland.
After an assist from Phil Foden, Jack Grealish’s goal was the difference at halftime, but the England international was not the only one to create chances against the Eagles.
In fact, every City outfield player created a chance in the first 45 minutes as the Premier League champions dominated the opening 45 minutes at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
It is the first time in Premier League history that all ten outfield players have done so in the first half.
While City were at their creative best this afternoon, they lacked that killer touch in the box, and it cost them, as Palace staged a late comeback to salvage a draw.
It’s the kind of performance Haaland would have loved if he’d been fit for the competition.
However, the Norwegian international is currently out with an unknown injury, and Pep Guardiola admits he is unsure when he will return.
“Hopefully he can travel to Saudi [for the Club World Cup], whether he can play the first or second game, I don’t know,” Catalan coach said.
“It’s not a fracture; it’s just stress.” Some players recover quickly, while others take longer.
10/10 – In the first half against Crystal Palace, all ten Manchester City outfield players created a chance. This is the first time in Premier League history (since 2006-07) that ten different players have created a chance for one team in the first half.
After starting the weekend in fourth place, City was already trailing in the Premier League title race.
And they could fall even further behind if Liverpool, Arsenal, and Aston Villa all win on Sunday, after letting a 2-0 lead slip to draw 2-2 with the Eagles.
Rico Lewis doubled City’s lead shortly after halftime with a close-range finish, but Jean-Philippe Mateta ignited the comeback in the 76th minute.
After Foden was fouled in the box, Michael Olise snatched a share of the points with a cool penalty in the fifth minute of injury time.
City will not return to Premier League action until after Christmas, as they will be in Saudi Arabia for the Club World Cup.
In the semi-finals, they will face AFC Champions League winners Urawu Red Diamonds before potentially facing Al Ahly.
