MESSI INJURED HIS GROIN IN A WORLD CUP QUALIFIER
Lionel Messi suffered a groin injury in Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Brazil on Tuesday evening, his final game of the 2023 calendar year. As a result, Argentina’s captain was replaced in the 78th minute of play.
“I felt discomfort in my adductor,” Messi said. “It was my last game of the year, so I have time to get well to start 2024 giving everything.” According to the forward, the delay in the start of the game caused by clashes between fans and police had a negative impact on his groin because it allowed his body to cool down in the locker room.
Messi has been plagued by injuries this season, missing five MLS games due to a hamstring strain. Argentina’s 2-0 win over Peru on Thursday marked his first full game since returning from injury on October 7. Argentina maintains its lead in the COMNEBOL 2026 World Cup qualifier standings with their victory over Brazil.
