MotoGP: Alex Marquez Sees Brother Marc as a Reference, Not an Idol—”My Idol Was Someone Else”
The year 2024 marked a significant turning point in Marc Marquez’s MotoGP career. After a challenging period filled with doubts and struggles, the Spanish rider made a remarkable comeback, reaching a level that many thought he might never attain again. This impressive resurgence has drawn admiration not only from the public but also from those closest to him, particularly his younger brother, Alex Marquez.
Following over a thousand days of pain and setbacks, Marc Marquez reemerged as a MotoGP force in 2024. His journey through arm injuries, multiple surgeries, lengthy rehabilitation, and uncertainty about his future nearly overshadowed his legendary status. However, joining Ducati Gresini allowed the six-time MotoGP champion to rewrite his story.
Parting ways with Repsol Honda was no easy feat for Marc, but his courage and innate instincts drove him to reinvent himself. From the Portimao Sprint, where he earned his first podium finish with the Ducati GP23, Marc’s trajectory of steady improvement became apparent. His resurgence was solidified in Austin and celebrated at Jerez, where he claimed his first main race podium of the year in front of his home fans. With 16 podium finishes—9 in Sprint races and 7 in main races—Marc ended the season third in the championship standings, a feat that seemed unattainable just a year prior.
Alex Marquez, who raced alongside his brother in 2024, offered insights into Marc’s character and talent. “Marc is pure talent, driven by instinct,” Alex noted. “What sets him apart is his nonconformist nature. Even when he wins, he’s never fully satisfied. He always pushes for more.”
Alex describes Marc as a straightforward and thoughtful person who prefers the simplicity of home life. “He’s very calm, and that’s exactly what you need to excel on the track.”
While many see Marc as a hero, Alex views him differently. “Marc isn’t my idol. My idol was Dani Pedrosa. Marc is a reference point, a model of hard work. His achievements aren’t accidental; they demonstrate that talent and hard work are inseparable,” Alex shared with Motoracing.
Looking ahead to 2025, Marc Marquez is set to join the official Ducati team, partnering with Pecco Bagnaia to form a formidable duo. His champion mindset and relentless drive will be more crucial than ever. For MotoGP fans, it’s clear that Marc, the phoenix from Cervera, still has many surprises in store.
