Netflix has officially greenlit its first original movie about the life and career of basketball icon Larry Bird. The film, currently untitled, is slated for release in mid-2025.

The biopic will explore Bird’s rise to fame, from his humble beginnings in French Lick, Indiana, to his storied 13-year career with the Boston Celtics. The movie will delve into his legendary rivalry with Magic Johnson, his leadership on the court, and his enduring legacy in the NBA.

“We’re thrilled to bring Larry Bird’s incredible story to life,” said Netflix’s Vice President of Original Films. “His determination, passion, and achievements on and off the court make for a compelling narrative.”

The film will be directed by Emmy-winning director, Jon Levinson, known for his work on ESPN’s “30 for 30” series. Larry Bird will serve as executive producer, ensuring the authenticity and accuracy of his story.
