Netflix Starts Filming the Wild Life of Steven Tyler — And It’s Going to Be Loud
Netflix Greenlights Explosive Steven Tyler Biopic: Production Begins on Rag Doll & Rock God
Netflix has officially announced the start of production on a high-voltage biopic centered on rock legend Steven Tyler, frontman of Aerosmith and one of the most charismatic figures in music history. Titled Rag Doll & Rock God, the film promises to be a no-holds-barred look at the man behind the scarves, screams, and stratospheric fame.
Slated for a 2026 release, the project will blend documentary-style storytelling with dramatized scenes, offering fans a raw and revealing portrait of Tyler’s five-decade career — from his turbulent early life in New York to his rise as the wild-eyed voice of America’s biggest rock band.
Netflix teased the project on social media early Friday, calling it “the story of a rock ‘n’ roll survivor whose voice changed music and whose demons nearly silenced it.” Production will begin this summer, with casting for young and older versions of Tyler reportedly underway.
What We Know So Far
Rag Doll & Rock God will be helmed by Emmy-winning director Ava Ramirez (The Last Solo, Gods of the Stage), known for her cinematic storytelling style and ability to capture the emotional depth behind larger-than-life personalities. The film is expected to include exclusive interviews with Steven Tyler himself, bandmates Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, as well as industry peers and close family members.
The biopic will dive deep into:
-
Aerosmith’s explosive formation and rise through the gritty rock scene of the 1970s
-
Tyler’s descent into addiction and the near-collapse of the band in the early 1980s
-
The miraculous comeback — including the band’s groundbreaking crossover with Run-DMC on Walk This Way, and the multi-platinum success of albums like Pump and Get a Grip
-
Tyler’s evolution beyond the stage, from fashion icon and American Idol judge to advocate for recovery and family man
Netflix executives say the film will “celebrate the power of performance, resilience, and reinvention,” while also confronting the personal cost of fame. “Steven Tyler is a once-in-a-generation talent and a true survivor,” said Netflix content chief Dana Wilcox. “This film will not just honor his music — it will humanize the myth.
Behind the Title
Rag Doll & Rock God is inspired by Aerosmith’s hit Rag Doll and Tyler’s nickname as the “Demon of Screamin’.” It reflects the duality of his legacy — the flamboyant showman and the deeply introspective artist.
No casting announcements have been made yet, but sources close to the project suggest producers are searching for a lead actor capable of embodying both the manic energy and emotional depth of Tyler, from his teens through to his 70s.
