Roger Federer reacts to Jannik Sinner playing at US Open after testing positive for banned substance (Doping)
Roger Federer Reacts to Jannik Sinner’s US Open Participation Amid Controversy Over Positive Drug Test: ‘It’s a Tricky Situation’
Roger Federer, one of tennis’s all-time greats, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Jannik Sinner, the world’s top-ranked player, who is competing in the US Open despite testing positive for a banned substance earlier this year. Sinner’s situation has sparked significant debate within the tennis community, as the young Italian star continues to compete while under scrutiny.
Federer, who is revered for his sportsmanship and integrity, expressed his concerns during an interview on the “TODAY” show. He noted that the presence of such controversies is detrimental to the sport, regardless of whether the player involved is guilty or not. “It’s not something we want to see in our sport, these types of news, regardless if he did something or not, or any player did,” Federer remarked. He added that it’s “just noise that we don’t want,” emphasizing how disruptive such situations can be to the sport’s image.
Sinner, who tested positive twice for the anabolic steroid clostebol in March, has not faced suspension, a decision that has drawn mixed reactions. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) investigated the matter and concluded that the substance entered Sinner’s system accidentally. The 23-year-old’s explanation—that the clostebol contamination came from a member of his support team using an over-the-counter spray to treat a wound—was deemed credible by scientific experts. This support team member unknowingly transferred the substance to Sinner during massages and sports therapy sessions.
Federer acknowledged the complexity of the situation, describing it as a “tricky” issue for all involved. He highlighted the psychological burden athletes face in such circumstances, stating, “It’s the nightmare of every athlete and team to have these allegations and these problems because we fill out these forms all day every day. And it lives with you. Every morning when you wake up, you think, ‘Is somebody at the door coming to test me?’ So it’s really difficult.”
Despite Sinner’s successful appeals against a provisional suspension, which allowed him to continue competing, the decision has sparked a debate over whether he received preferential treatment. Some tennis fans and observers have questioned the fairness of the process, especially since other athletes have faced suspension while their cases were being investigated.
Federer addressed this concern, saying, “I understand the frustration of, ‘Has he been treated the same as others?’ And I think this is where it comes down to.” He acknowledged that while many believe in Sinner’s innocence, the inconsistency in how the case was handled compared to others raises questions. “I think we all trust pretty much that Jannik didn’t do anything, but the inconsistency potentially that he didn’t have to sit out while they weren’t 100 percent sure what was going on, I think that’s the question here that needs to be answered,” Federer explained.
However, Federer also stressed the importance of trusting the process and the authorities involved in such investigations. “But look, it is what it is, and we need to trust the process as well of anyone involved here,” he concluded.
As Sinner continues his journey at the US Open, where he is the No. 1 seed, he remains focused on his performance. The controversy, however, looms over his campaign as he prepares to face fifth-seeded Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals. Sinner has been in remarkable form, having already won the Miami Open in March and the Cincinnati Open in August, both after the positive drug tests.
The outcome of Sinner’s US Open run will likely be scrutinized even more given the circumstances, but for now, he and the tennis world must navigate the complexities of a situation that has cast a shadow over one of the sport’s brightest young stars.
