Roger Federer Set to Apologize to Carlos Alcaraz as He Returns to the Tennis Spotlight for the Laver Cup
Roger Federer, who has kept a low profile since his retirement in 2022, is stepping back into the tennis spotlight this week. While he has made occasional appearances at major tennis events, Federer has largely been enjoying life post-retirement after his farewell at the 2022 Laver Cup in London.
Now, Federer is back in full swing, arriving early in Berlin to be fully involved in this year’s Laver Cup tournament. The Laver Cup, which Federer helped bring to life in tribute to tennis legend Rod Laver, has been held annually since 2017. This year, Team Europe, led by Bjorn Borg, will face Team World, captained by John McEnroe. Team World claimed their first title in 2023, but Federer is confident Team Europe will bounce back, especially with stars like Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, and Casper Ruud in the lineup. Team World, however, has strong American representation with players like Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, and Frances Tiafoe.
Federer expressed excitement about Team Europe’s chances in singles, though he acknowledged Team World’s strength in doubles. He’s also looking forward to spending time with Alcaraz, a young star who has admired Federer since childhood. Federer humorously admitted he owes Alcaraz an apology for choosing to warm up with Alcaraz’s coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, over him during Wimbledon years ago.
Reflecting on the Laver Cup’s early days, Federer recalled the uncertainty surrounding the event’s success when it first launched seven years ago. He described the unique experience of winning in a team setting, which is uncommon in tennis. Federer, who co-conceived the event with his agent Tony Godsick, emphasized the importance of the Laver Cup in fostering camaraderie between different generations of players and inspiring them to pursue greatness.
For Federer, the team-oriented environment of the Laver Cup creates lasting memories and motivations, bringing together tennis legends and rising stars for a weekend of intense competition. He shared how being part of a team, even in an individual sport like tennis, adds a new level of emotional depth to the game, making victories even more special.
