Romelu Lukaku is sent off for a ‘leg breaker’ tackle, and Jose Mourinho is shown the red card.
After being sent off for an appalling tackle, Romelu Lukaku was at the center of some chaotic scenes.
In addition, the Roma striker’s studs-up challenge on Fiorentina’s Christian Kouame was deemed a potential leg-breaker. The two teams were tied 1-1 in the final minutes of their Serie A match at the Stadio Olimpico when Lukaku’s sliding challenge was more than a degree off target.
Replays showed the Belgian clearly making contact with Kouame’s shin, with his boot ripping the Fiorentina man’s sock apart. Not that the clear red-worthy attempt prevented Giallorossi boss Jose Mourinho from protesting wildly as the scenes devolved in Italy’s capital.
In response to Lukaku’s lunge, La Viola manager Vincenzo Italiano ran down the touchline, which could cause him to miss games against Bologna, Napoli, and Juventus. The challenge was made even more absurd by the fact that Nicola Zalewski had already been sent off for Roma, who held on to draw 1-1 despite the deficit.
“What a stupid, dangerous tackle by Lukaku,” snarled one online viewer. “He could have broken the Fiorentina player’s tibia into two pieces.”
“You can’t argue with that,” said another. “Disgusting from Lukaku.” Others saw the lighter side of the incident, and a third viewer responded, “Alexa, show me a forward’s tackle.”
