Simone Biles Criticizes Reporters for Post-Medal Questions at Paris Olympics
Simone Biles has voiced her frustration with reporters at the Paris Olympics for asking athletes about their future plans immediately after winning medals. Biles, who has become the most decorated American gymnast in history at this summer’s Games, secured another gold medal in the vault finals on Saturday.
The 27-year-old gymnast had already claimed gold in the team finals and the all-around events earlier in the week before winning her third gold of the Games with a score of 15.3 across her two vaults. Despite her success, Biles took to social media to criticize the type of questions posed by reporters.
On X, Biles wrote, “You guys really gotta stop asking athletes what’s next after they win a medal at the Olympics.” She followed up with another post saying, “Let us soak up the moment we’ve worked our whole lives for.” When a fan asked her what she planned to do next, she humorously replied, “Babysitting the medal.”
Biles’ victory in the vault final on Saturday marked her seventh Olympic gold medal. Performing in front of a star-studded audience that included actor John Travolta, track star Allyson Felix, artists Pharrell and Flavor Flav, her teammates, and her parents, Biles averaged 15.3 for her Yurchenko double pike and Cheng vaults, securing her second gold in the event eight years after her triumph in Rio.
This achievement makes Biles the second woman in history to win two vault titles, following Vera Caslavska of Czechoslovakia, who won in 1964 and 1968. Biles now has three gold medals from the Paris Games, having also won the team finals and the individual all-around competition. Her teammate Jade Carey secured bronze, while Brazil’s Rebecca Andrade took the silver medal.
Biles now boasts 10 Olympic medals in her career, tying her for the third most by a female gymnast. Additionally, she has increased her total medal count at major international competitions to 40, the most ever by any gymnast.
