Statement from Benjamin Mendy’s attorney as the he files a lawsuit against Man City
The defender is suing Manchester City for “unauthorized deductions from wages,” according to Benjamin Mendy’s attorney.
In August 2021, Mendy, 29, was charged by the police and suspended by City. Following a preliminary trial in January, he was declared not guilty on six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault; however, the jury was unable to reach a decision on two further allegations.
At a July retrial, Mendy was declared not guilty on one count of rape and one count of attempted rape. Between August 2021 and September 2023, the France international, who last played for his nation in 2019, did not participate in any first-team football matches.
Just 13 days before his criminal accusations were made public, in August 2021, the defender made his final appearance for City against Tottenham. Mendy is currently attempting to collect the £100,000-per-week salary that City withheld from him in September 2021.
Mendy’s legal team is requesting payment for the wages he received from September 2021 to June 2023, the month the City terminated him when his contract expired. It’s understood that the footballer has filed a lawsuit against City for unpaid wages totaling between £9 million and £10 million.
Mendy is being represented by sports attorney Nick De Marco KC, who made the following statement: “Benjamin Mendy, a former Manchester City player, is being represented by Nick De Marco KC in a multi-million dollar lawsuit alleging unauthorized wage deductions.
“After being prosecuted with multiple offenses for which he was later found not guilty, Manchester City FC did not pay Mr. Mendy any money whatsoever from September 2021 until the end of his contract in June 2023. A tribunal for employment will hear the matter.”
In July 2017, City paid £52 million to purchase Mendy from Monaco, the French team, making him the most expensive defender in football history. Having helped Monaco win the Ligue 1 championship against all odds the previous season, he came to the Etihad with a remarkable resume.
Along with other accolades, Mendy won three Premier League titles while playing for City, although he also had injury issues. Just 50 Premier League games were played by him prior to his suspension.
Mendy is attempting to start again in France with Lorient, a Ligue 1 team. Shortly after his July acquittal, he inked a two-year contract with the club, and in September he made his debut. This season, he has made three appearances off the bench.
Mendy has made ten appearances for France at the senior level. He played one game in Russia during the 2018 World Cup and was a member of the winning team.
