TARDOZZI TOLD BAGNAIA TO ‘STOP BEING A GENTLEMAN’ IN MOTOGP 2024
A behind-the-scenes clip from a new Ducati documentary has unveiled a tense moment between Ducati team manager Davide Tardozzi and Francesco “Pecco” Bagnaia during the intense 2024 MotoGP season. Tardozzi urged the reigning champion to shed his gentlemanly demeanor on the track, as his reserved approach was threatening his championship hopes against rival Jorge Martin.
A Heated Warning at Buriram
The pivotal moment occurred during the sprint race at the Buriram circuit in Thailand. After a blistering start, Jorge Martin aggressively forced both Bagnaia and himself wide at Turn 1, setting the tone for the race. Despite starting on pole, Bagnaia finished third after Martin overtook him with a daring move in the final laps.
Frustrated with Bagnaia’s lack of aggression, Tardozzi delivered a fiery message:
“Pecco, Martin had the guts to knock you out. He was already targeting you before the start. He decided to bother you, and he did what he needed to do. That’s what you’ve got to do tomorrow in the main race.
“You can’t always be the gentleman. These guys will tear you apart. Stop letting them kick your ass and fight back.”
Aggression Pays Off, but at a Cost
The stern pep talk seemed to ignite a fire in Bagnaia. In the main race the following day, he retaliated with an impressive victory over Martin, clinching the Thai Grand Prix and reducing the championship deficit to 17 points.
However, any hope of a comeback faltered in the next round in Malaysia, where a critical error in the shortened race proved costly. Ultimately, Bagnaia fell short of defending his title, losing to Martin by just 10 points in the final standings.
A Season of Respect, but Missed Opportunities
Throughout the season, Bagnaia maintained a respectful relationship with Martin, avoiding on-track clashes and media controversies. While this sportsmanship was commendable, it may have hindered his ability to compete more ruthlessly when it mattered most.
The Ducati documentary sheds light on the high-stakes nature of MotoGP racing, where even the smallest decisions—like when to be aggressive—can determine the outcome of a championship. For Bagnaia, the 2024 season was a lesson in balancing respect with the raw competitiveness needed to reclaim his crown.
