Theo Walcott believes the 22-year-old Brighton midfielder could shine at Tottenham.
Gilmour was regarded as a potential future superstar while progressing through the Chelsea academy, but the midfielder never made it into the first team at his boyhood club.
Brighton paid £9 million to sign the youngster from Stamford Bridge 18 months ago after he impressed on loan at Norwich City during the 2021-22 season.
The 22-year-old struggled to establish himself as a regular in the Seagulls’ starting eleven last season, but that has changed in recent months, with the youngster becoming a fixture in Roberto De Zerbi’s midfield.
Will Billy Gilmour be a success at Tottenham?
Walcott believes Gilmour is capable of stepping up to a club just outside of the Champions League places.
The former Arsenal midfielder believes the Scotland international will fit in well in Ange Postecoglou’s squad.
“I could see him playing for Tottenham, I could see him playing for that type of club,” he told BBC build up about Gilmour. To be fair, I believe Tottenham are just outside the top four.
“But, it’s a lot of pressure on that man’s shoulders, I’m not quite sure, we just need to be patient, but I would say just outside of the top four and that’s the reason I said Tottenham.”
While Tottenham need midfield reinforcements, and Gilmour would be a good fit for Postecoglou’s system, Brighton are unlikely to let him leave on the cheap, with the midfielder under contract at the Amex Stadium until 2026.
