‘Tired of my own club,’ Gary Neville says, adding that he no longer wants to watch the Red Devils play
Erik ten Hag’s side gave a devoted legion of fans numbering in the millions little to cheer about in their 1-0 loss to Newcastle last time out. That Premier League defeat followed an error-plagued Champions League draw with Galatasaray, which has left the club’s European ambitions in 2023-24 hanging by a thread.
WHAT NEVILLE SAID ABOUT MAN UTD
All of this is taking place against a backdrop of uncertainty off the field, with the unpopular Glazer family still present, and Neville has stated on his Sky Sports podcast about United losing their appeal: “It’s far below par, it’s extremely disappointing, and I believe the backlash against the manager is beginning.” There are then those same noises that say, ‘Surely we can’t get rid of another manager, we’ve got to get rid of the players because they are the ones who have got rid of the other managers’. I’m bored now that we’ve turned to the owners. I’ve had enough of my own club. I don’t want to do their games anymore, I don’t want to watch their games anymore, and that is the saddest indictment you can have of your football club when you get bored or tired of watching them.”
Neville went on to say that, despite continuing to spend heavily in the transfer market and bringing their six-year wait for major silverware to an end when winning the Carabao Cup in 2022-23: “It’s not just me; in the last few weeks, a couple of people have said, ‘Enough’.” The stupid thing is that I’ll plan my entire Wednesday night [vs. Chelsea] around watching Manchester United. That’s life; we go back and watch them, don’t we? But that’s how I feel: I’m sick of watching them. That is a terrible situation to be in. I adore that club and the thrill of football, but I am already worried about what will happen at Anfield in two weeks, simply because I believe it will be a disaster. I’m already worried about what will happen against Chelsea on Wednesday night because it could be a disaster.”
United will host Chelsea, who are currently seventh in the Premier League table, five points behind the top four and nine behind leaders Arsenal. The Red Devils are scheduled to visit Anfield on December 17, having already faced Bayern Munich in a must-win Champions League game at Old Trafford.
