TOOL on Netflix? The Cult Band That Outsold Pop Stars Now Gets Its Story Told
Netflix to Release Bold New Docuseries on TOOL: The Band That Bent Time
“Their music shattered genre. Their visuals redefined storytelling. Now, Netflix tells the story of TOOL.”
In a move that’s already sparking excitement across the rock and metal community, Netflix has officially announced a docuseries on progressive metal pioneers TOOL, one of the most enigmatic and sonically adventurous bands of the past three decades. Titled “Undertow: The Spiral of TOOL”, the series is currently in production and slated for a late 2025 premiere.
Known for their hypnotic rhythms, cerebral lyrics, and long stretches between albums, TOOL have always thrived in mystery—and now Netflix is pulling back the curtain. This deep-dive docuseries will chronicle the band’s rise from L.A.’s underground scene in the early ’90s to their status as multi-platinum, Grammy-winning legends who remain as elusive as they are influential.
The band—Maynard James Keenan (vocals), Adam Jones (guitar), Justin Chancellor (bass), and Danny Carey (drums)—is working closely with the producers, offering rare insight into their famously guarded creative process. According to Netflix insiders, fans can expect never-before-seen studio footage, rare interviews, and a stunning exploration of their psychedelic live shows and iconic visual art, much of which was created by guitarist and visual mastermind Adam Jones.
“We’ve always made music for ourselves first,” Maynard reportedly says in the teaser. “But we’re aware now that the world has been listening, interpreting, feeling it in their own ways. That’s what this story is really about.”
The series will explore key moments in the band’s evolution—from their groundbreaking 1993 debut Undertow, to the genre-defying Ænima, to the haunting spiritual layers of Lateralus, and the long-awaited return with Fear Inoculum in 2019 after a 13-year hiatus.
Along the way, the documentary will delve into TOOL’s fiercely independent ethos, their refusal to bend to industry demands, and the almost mythic reputation they’ve built by saying little and letting the music speak. It will also address the artistic tension within the band, including Maynard’s balance between TOOL, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer, and how their music became a medium for both transcendence and resistance.
Netflix promises the docuseries won’t just appeal to TOOL fans—it aims to reach anyone fascinated by artistic obsession, discipline, and the power of music to rewire human perception.
