Tottenham excited about Chelsea’s point deduction regarding FFP.

The Premier League’s other teams, including Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, will be closely monitoring Chelsea’s current circumstances in relation to any Financial Fair Play (FFP) violations. Tens of millions of pounds were paid in a series of payments made over a ten-year period to former Stamford Bridge owner Roman Abramovich, according to a joint investigation conducted by The Guardian, a number of international outlets, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ), and Germany’s Paper Trail Media.

It is believed that these payments are for the benefit of the Blues, and they are ‘routed through offshore vehicles’ that belong to the Russian billionaire. This has led some to wonder if the governing organizations were informed about the accounts. According to the Guardian, ‘four leading sports lawyers’ have informed them that certain payments may have violated FFP regulations set forth by both UEFA and the Premier League. Football finance specialist Kieran Maguire asserts that a financial penalty or burden is less likely than a points deduction.

“Sanctions would be either financial or a points deduction if there is proof that the club has used third-party transactions to circumvent the profitability and sustainability rules,” he stated. The latter is more likely since any commission looking into the conditions of a club would want to provide a warning to others so they won’t repeat the same behavior.”

Mauricio Pochettino’s team is presently 10th in the table with 16 points from their first ten Premier League games, so it’s unclear when exactly this will come to a head. The Blues are currently 12 points behind league leaders Manchester City, 10 points behind fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur, 11 points behind Arsenal and Liverpool.
