Joxean Matxin’s Future Uncertain at UAE Team Emirates as Contract Nears End

UAE Team Emirates has experienced a tumultuous start to the Vuelta a España, with Adam Yates claiming victory in Granada and re-entering the GC battle, while João Almeida abandoned the race. Behind the scenes, the team has been supported by a dedicated crew, including the influential Spanish scout and sports manager, Joxean Matxin. However, Matxin’s role with the team may be coming to an end after this season.

Matxin, who joined UAE Team Emirates after making a name for himself at Soudal – Quick-Step, played a crucial role in signing key riders such as Tadej Pogacar and Juan Ayuso, with whom he shares a close relationship. Known for his hands-on approach, Matxin is a familiar figure, often engaging with fans and journalists during races.

According to the Spanish newspaper AS, Matxin’s contract is set to expire at the end of this year and has yet to be renewed. It remains unclear if the contract will be extended, or if 2024 will mark the end of his tenure with UAE. Recently, he has been involved in securing young talent, including Pablo Torres, who delivered an outstanding performance at the Tour de l’Avenir, finishing second in the General Classification after winning two stages. Torres is already being compared to some of the team’s top riders.
