UAM to close season against rival SAU
The University of Arkansas at Monticello football team’s season has again taken a disappointing turn despite a promising start. The team is currently experiencing an eight-game losing streak, marking their longest slump since 2012. With an overall record of 2-8 in the Great American Conference, the Boll Weevils are facing their 15th consecutive season without a winning record.
Head coach Hud Jackson, in his 13th year at the helm, is well aware of the challenges plaguing the Weevils. The team’s struggles are intensified by untimely injuries to key players, hindering their aim to elevate their athletic facilities and compete with leading rivals like Ouachita Baptist, Henderson State, and Harding. Jackson expressed the difficulty of finding words to address such situations, acknowledging the physical demands of football. The team has to rely on younger players due to injuries affecting experienced players.
While a championship seems far from their grasp this season, the Weevils face an in-state rivalry with Southern Arkansas University (SAU) in the Battle of the Timberlands. Their final game of the season will be in Magnolia, kicking off at Wilkins Stadium. UAM’s offense, currently ranking sixth in the Great American Conference, will be led by one of three first-year quarterbacks: Buddy Taylor, Austin Wadsworth, or Caden Middleton.
UAM faces a challenge in wrapping up their season against SAU, who leads the all-time series. The Weevils have their passing game as a strong suit, ranking second-best in the conference, while SAU demonstrates proficiency in producing rushing yardage.
Coach Jackson highlighted the importance of preparing for the game, emphasizing readiness and the team’s desire to regain a coveted trophy. The upcoming match will serve as a pivotal moment for the team’s future as they aim to build momentum and kickstart the recruiting process.
