Eli Tomac vs. Jett Lawrence: Epic Duel at San Diego Supercross Ends in Tomac’s 53rd Career Win
The San Diego Supercross delivered an unforgettable showdown as Eli Tomac secured his 53rd 450SX career victory, battling fiercely against rising star Jett Lawrence in a high-stakes clash.
In just the second round of the 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, Tomac, riding for Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing, demonstrated why he’s nicknamed “Beast Mode.” The two-time 450SX champion held off reigning champion Jett Lawrence of Honda HRC Progressive, proving his dominance yet again and extending his streak to 11 consecutive seasons with at least one premier class win.
A Battle for the Ages
From the start, the 450SX main event had fans on the edge of their seats. Cooper Webb of Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing grabbed the lead early, followed closely by Ken Roczen, Hunter Lawrence, and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Malcolm Stewart. Jett Lawrence slotted into fifth, while Tomac began his charge from sixth.
Jett and Tomac quickly found themselves locked in a one-on-one duel. Jett made an early move to overtake Tomac, only for the veteran to reclaim his position with a bold pass on the outside. Reflecting on the moment, Jett joked, “I got around him, but then I messed up and let him take it back. That was a forehead slap moment for me.”
As the race unfolded, both riders carved their way through the field, showcasing their skills and adaptability. Tomac’s relentless pace brought him past Stewart and Hunter Lawrence, with Jett closely trailing and studying every move. “Racing behind him was fun,” Jett admitted. “It’s fascinating to see how he approaches the track compared to me.”
Tomac’s experience shone as he used clever line choices to navigate the slick San Diego dirt. After passing Roczen for second, he overtook Webb with a flawless move through the whoops to claim the lead. Not far behind, Jett passed Webb to set up an intense battle for the top spot.
For the next several laps, the crowd watched in awe as Jett stayed within a second of Tomac, searching for opportunities to make his move. “I picked up on a few things, but it took me too long,” Jett said, acknowledging his struggle to match Tomac’s precision in key sections of the track.
Close Calls and Mutual Respect
Late in the race, Tomac had a near-disastrous moment while lapping another rider, Vince Friese. “I thought Jett was going to catch me there,” Tomac admitted. “I lost momentum and felt like I might lose the race.”
Despite Tomac’s slip, Jett couldn’t capitalize due to a minor error in the whoops with just two laps remaining. “I made a few dumb mistakes, but I learned a lot,” Jett reflected. “Second place isn’t bad—it’s better than 12th.”
Both riders showed immense respect for one another after the race. “It’s great to battle with someone like Jett,” Tomac said. “We raced hard for 20 minutes straight, no breaks.” Jett echoed the sentiment: “It’s fun racing someone who doesn’t take cheap shots. You can trust them and focus on proper race craft.”
Eli Tomac’s victory not only solidified his legendary status but also set the tone for an exciting season ahead. Meanwhile, Jett Lawrence proved he’s more than capable of challenging the sport’s best, leaving fans eager for the next chapter in their rivalry.
